West German Lava Glaze Pottery Vase – Model 481/18 – Mid-Century Ceramic
A beautiful West German lava glaze pottery vase, dating from the 1960s–1970s, featuring the rich earthy glaze combinations that made West German ceramics so iconic during the mid-century period.
This compact vase has a well-balanced, rounded form with a softly flared rim, finished in layered volcanic lava glazes of warm browns, caramel, cream and charcoal. The textured glaze creates a striking, fat-lava effect, with bubbles and pools that pool across the surface, producing organic patterns unique to each firing.
The vase carries the impressed model number 481/18 and “Germany” mark to the base, along with what appears to be the maker’s mark, possibly Bay Keramik, a well-known West German pottery manufacturer of the period.
Its size makes it ideal as a display piece on a shelf, sideboard, or coffee table, adding authentic mid-century character and warm ceramic texture to a room.
