About the Artist – Walter Henry Sweet watercolour Artist (1889-1943):
Walter Henry Sweet was a prolific British artist, best known for his street scenes, moorland views, and seascapes that showcased the beauty of the West Country. Born on April 11th, 1889, Sweet studied at the Exeter School of Art under his mentor and close friend, John Shapland. His work was regularly featured in the Devon and Exeter Annual Exhibition at the Elands Gallery throughout the early 1900s.
Sweet’s artistic career was interrupted by the outbreak of World War I, during which he served in the Devonshire Regiment and saw active duty overseas. Despite the challenges of war, his passion for painting never waned, and he continued to capture the landscapes of Devon, including the dramatic seascapes and quaint village scenes that earned him local recognition.
