Monumental Arts and Crafts Style Hammered Brass Oval Tray or Wall Plaque

A striking and unusually large oval brass tray or decorative wall plaque in the Arts and Crafts style.

The piece has a hand-hammered or repoussé finish. Numerous small crescent-shaped indentations cover the surface, creating a richly dimpled texture that catches and reflects the light.

Nine raised brass bosses decorate the broad outer border and give the piece a strong architectural quality. A small central boss provides a further point of interest.

Its warm golden surface has developed a rich, naturally aged patina. Subtle colour variations, darker marks and areas of oxidation enhance its authentic decorative character.

The Arts and Crafts movement celebrated traditional materials, visible craftsmanship and handmade decoration. These qualities appear strongly in the irregular hammering and honest metalwork of this impressive piece.

Its monumental scale makes it a true statement object. It could serve as an oversized decorative tray or hang as wall art.

Measurements

  • Length: 113 cm

  • Width: 85 cm

  • Shape: Oval

  • Material: Brass

  • Finish: Hand-hammered or repoussé decoration

Styling & Uses

This monumental brass piece offers several decorative possibilities around the home.

  • Place it flat on a large farmhouse or dining table as a dramatic centrepiece.

  • Hang it horizontally above a fireplace, console table or sideboard.

  • Display it vertically in a hallway or beside a staircase.

  • Use it as an oversized tray on a large table or ottoman.

  • Add a simple timber or wrought-iron base to create a unique coffee table.

  • Style it within an Arts and Crafts, country-house, Mediterranean or eclectic interior.

The warm brass surface works particularly well against aged timber, deep paint colours, lime plaster, natural stone and traditional wallpaper.

Condition

The piece remains in good decorative vintage condition.

The brass displays tarnishing, small dents, scratches, surface marks and variations in colour from age and use. There are also areas of darker oxidation and natural patination.

The hand-worked decoration has natural irregularities. These are characteristic of its construction rather than later damage.

We have left the surface unpolished to preserve its warm, timeworn appearance.

Please study the photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition report.

Provenance

The earlier history of this remarkable brass piece is unknown. We selected it for its exceptional scale, handmade decoration and wonderfully aged surface.

Large decorative brass trays were traditionally used for serving, entertaining and as removable tops for low tables. They were also displayed as decorative wall pieces.

Its Arts and Crafts character comes from its visible hand-working and emphasis on the natural beauty of the metal. The crescent-shaped hammer marks and subtle irregularities give every part of the surface an individual quality.

The piece has clearly been used and displayed over many years. Its accumulated marks and natural patina contribute to its authenticity and decorative appeal.
