Set of 6 Vintage Belgian / French Enamel Kitchen Canisters / 'Extra Dur' Stamp / Red & White Striped

DESCRIPTION

A rare complete set of six vintage enamel storage canisters (boîtes à épices), stamped "Extra Dur - Belgium" on the undersides. Featuring a crisp white enamel finish decorated with bold crimson-red horizontal bands and clean typography, this set includes a full progression of French kitchen labels: SUCRE (Sugar), FARINE (Flour), CAFE (Coffee), PATES (Pasta), CHICOREE (Chicory), and POIVRE (Pepper). Made by renowned Belgian enamelworks for the French domestic market, each canister is topped with a matching domed lid featuring an integrated knob. Sourced directly from a French dealer, the set nests neatly together when unlidded and offers vibrant vintage character for open dressers, shelving, or countertops.

Private UK Collection; acquired from a French antiques dealer at Ardingly Antiques Fair.

STORY

Belgian enamel manufacturers like Emailleries de Saint-Servais were celebrated across Europe for their superior durability, stamping their top-tier kitchen lines "Extra Dur" (Extra Durable). Produced for French homes in the mid-20th century, these red-and-white striped sets remain among the most iconic and sought-after styles of European enamelware. Finding a complete, matching six-piece set bearing its original maker's mark and all matching lids intact is increasingly rare.

CONDITION REPORT

Good vintage condition with appropriate age-related character. The enamel surfaces retain a bright gloss with sharp, legible red lettering. Maker's stamp "Extra Dur - Belgium" clearly visible on the base. As expected with vintage enamelware, there are light enamel chips and minor surface oxidation around the rim edges and lid undersides, adding to their authentic history.
