🔎 Provenance:
We found these chairs on a drizzly Tuesday in a quiet corner of North Yorkshire — the kind of small countryside estate sale you don’t see on maps or mailing lists, but through whispers in the trade. The house belonged to a retired architect, one of that rare generation who’d trained in the 1950s and still lived among the pieces they’d once sketched into their blueprints.
The interior was frozen in time: teak sideboards paired with concrete planters, brutalist lighting over soft sheepskins, a perfectly lived-in Bauhaus-meets-rural-modernism mashup. And there, half tucked beneath a wool throw and beside an Eileen Grey side table, sat the pair — Mid-Century Lounge Chairs by R.W. Toothill. Understated, but impeccable.
There was something quietly perfect about them — the satin-smooth teak frame, the angles of the arms, the tension between elegance and utility. You could instantly see why Toothill pieces, though lesser known than the Danish greats, were coveted among those in the know: they took inspiration from Scandinavian design and refined it with British craftsmanship. These weren’t chairs made to shout — they were made to last. And they had.
We carefully transported them back to Sussex and began a full restoration — not to alter, but to reawaken. The original teak was cleaned, oiled by hand to reveal its golden depth and left with just the right amount of character. We re-webbed the seats with authentic Pirelli rubber, giving them back the flexibility and spring they were designed for. Finally, we chose a premium contemporary fabric in a muted tone that nods to the 1960s but feels at home in a modern interior — ideal for your Brighton loft, Lewes townhouse, or London pied-à-terre.
