Set of Six Mid-Century Teak Dining Chairs by John Herbert for A Younger Ltd – Circa 1960s -

4 standard chairs and 2 Carvers

A beautifully designed set of six mid-century teak dining chairs by the respected British designer John Herbert for A Younger Ltd, dating from the 1960s. This elegant set consists of four standard dining chairs and two matching carver armchairs, offering a refined and practical seating arrangement for a mid-century dining table.

The design is often mistaken for Scandinavian work due to its clean lines and organic shaping, and it bears a strong resemblance to the iconic Niels Otto Møller Model 75 chairs. However, these are a distinctly British interpretation of the mid-century modern style, produced during the golden era of British contemporary furniture.

Crafted in solid teak, the chairs feature beautifully shaped frames with gently curved backrests and slender tapered legs. The sculptural lines and balanced proportions create a design that is both elegant and comfortable, reflecting Herbert’s ability to blend practicality with timeless modern aesthetics.

The set includes two carver armchairs, ideal for the ends of a dining table, paired with four side chairs for the main seating. The seats are currently upholstered in dark brown vinyl, which presents well and suits the period look, though they could easily be re-upholstered in a fabric of your choice if desired.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, A Younger Ltd were widely regarded as one of Britain’s leading makers of high-quality contemporary furniture. Their pieces were produced in relatively limited numbers and are known for their excellent craftsmanship and durability. This period represents the firm’s finest production years before the British furniture market shifted in the late 1960s.

Condition

The chairs have been carefully polished, bringing out the rich warmth and grain of the teak. They are in very good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use consistent with their period. The vinyl seat pads remain in good order and are comfortable for everyday use.
