19th century Large French Biot Jar / Pot

This 19th-century French Biot Jar

This exceptional example of Provençal pottery originates from the historic village of Biot near Antibes on the Côte d’Azur. These iconic jars were traditionally used throughout Southern France for storing olives, oil, and grains, serving both a practical and decorative role in rural life. Handcrafted from terracotta using time-honoured techniques, this Biot jar features its hallmark glazed interior rim—a practical design element that once helped seal in oils and prevent seepage through the porous clay. The gently tapered form, rich natural colouring, and beautiful aged patina reflect generations of use and exposure to the Mediterranean climate, making it a genuine collector’s piece. Whether placed indoors or outdoors, this antique French jar adds rustic charm and timeless elegance to any setting. Perfect for interior designers, garden stylists, or collectors of fine European ceramics, it functions as a striking planter, sculptural accent, or statement vessel. Its weathered surface and historical provenance make it highly sought after, especially in such well-preserved condition.
