A Woman in the Garden at Limnerslease, Possibly Mary Seton Watts
Attributed to Louis Reid Deuchars (1870–1927)
British School | Circa 1900 | Oil on Canvas
An atmospheric and historically significant garden painting depicting a seated woman within the secluded Rose Garden at Limnerslease, the Surrey home of the celebrated Victorian artist George Frederic Watts (1817–1904) and his wife, Mary Seton Watts (1849–1938), artist, designer and leading figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement.
The composition captures an intimate moment of quiet contemplation. A woman sits beside the garden's distinctive terracotta sundial, surrounded by flowering borders, slender evergreens and warm red-brick walls. Beyond the garden rises the tiled roof of Watts's sculpture barn.
Soft greens, earthy reds and a luminous sky combine to create a richly atmospheric view of a private garden closely associated with one of Britain's most remarkable artistic households.
The Garden at Limnerslease
Research undertaken with the assistance of Watts Gallery – Artists' Village, Compton, has established the location depicted in the painting.
Watts Gallery identified the garden and confirmed that its central sundial was designed by Mary Seton Watts and made by Frank Mitchell.
Mary Watts's own writings describe the transformation of the former cattle-yard adjoining the sculpture barn into a secluded garden, created as a peaceful retreat where her husband could rest.
The painting therefore records an identifiable and historically important setting within the Watts household, rather than an imagined garden scene.
Attribution to Louis Reid Deuchars
The painting is attributed to Louis Reid Deuchars (1870–1927), the Scottish painter and sculptor whose artistic career was closely connected with George Frederic Watts and Mary Seton Watts.
Deuchars assisted Mary Watts with the remarkable decorative programme of the Watts Cemetery Chapel at Compton, one of the outstanding achievements of the British Arts and Crafts movement. He subsequently worked at the pottery she established at Aldourie, her family's home on Loch Ness.
The attribution is supported by correspondence with Dr Louise Boreham, a researcher of Deuchars's work, who wrote on 21 October 2026 that she was:
“I'm sure [the painting] was done by Deuchars.”
Particularly compelling is the compositional relationship with Deuchars's portrait of George Frederic Watts seated within the same garden.
Both works feature the distinctive brick gateway, tiled building and central sundial, establishing a close visual connection between the compositions.
In the present painting, the garden is explored more extensively, with greater attention given to its flowering borders, architectural surroundings and atmospheric setting.
The Identity of the Seated Woman
The seated figure may represent Mary Seton Watts, although her identity remains unconfirmed.
Watts Gallery acknowledged Mary as a possibility but expressed reservations concerning the figure's apparent stature, suggesting that the sitter might alternatively have been a member of the household staff.
The painting is therefore offered with the sitter's identity open, reflecting the available research.
Regardless of the woman's identity, the work offers a fascinating glimpse into the private domestic and artistic environment of Limnerslease.
Historical and Artistic Significance
This painting offers collectors an unusual opportunity to acquire a work associated with the artistic circle of George Frederic and Mary Seton Watts.
Its identifiable setting, close compositional relationship to Deuchars's known work and the research supporting its attribution give the painting particular historical interest.
Unlike a formal portrait or an idealised landscape, the composition captures a quieter, more personal aspect of life at Limnerslease: a solitary figure seated in the garden created by Mary Watts.
The work will be of particular interest to collectors of British Victorian and Edwardian painting, the Arts and Crafts movement, garden subjects and works associated with the Watts artistic circle.
