Pair of 1920s French Oak Bedside Tables – Normandy Barn Find
An exceptional pair of solid oak French bedside cupboards, combining rugged rustic history with refined Art Nouveau detailing.
Discovered tucked away in a barn in the Normandy countryside, these 1920s cabinets are remarkably solid, reassuringly heavy, and built to last out of beautifully grained European oak.
The Restoration & Finish
When we found them, a previous owner had covered them in a heavy, shiny black paint, claiming they were ebonized—which they definitely weren’t! We have carefully restored and hand-distressed them to strip away that harsh modern shine, revealing the beautiful texture of the timber underneath. The result is a moody, matte black finish with a gorgeous, time-worn patina that shows off the deep, rustic character of the wood.
Craftsmanship & Details
As shown in the close-up images, each table features:
-
Storage: A smoothly operating top drawer constructed with traditional, high-quality dovetailed joints (see IMG_4519.jpg), sitting above a spacious lower cupboard with a single internal shelf for extra organization (visible in IMG_4521.jpg and IMG_4520.jpg).
-
Hardware: Exceptional, genuine Art Nouveau brass handles (dating from c. 1890–1900). These handles feature stunning ornate casting and a wonderful aged contrast against the dark timber (detailed in IMG_4512.jpg and IMG_4516.jpg).
-
Carving: Elegant, fluid scrollwork carved into the drawer fronts and cupboard doors, adding a touch of classic French elegance to a chunky, rustic form.
Styling Note
As pictured in IMG_4512.jpg and IMG_4506.jpg, their dark, dramatic silhouette looks incredible paired with classic gilt frames, vintage oil paintings, and rich textiles. Because of their matte texture and clean lines, they would sit beautifully in a classic country bedroom, a relaxed moody interior, or as statement end tables in a modern, eclectic living space.
