Item: Antique French Glazed Terracotta Walnut Oil Jar (Cruche à Huile de Noix / Mélard)

Origin: Rural France (commonly associated with regions like Quercy, Auvergne, or Périgord)

Estimated Age: Circa late 18th Century to mid-19th Century (c. 1780–1850)

Description & Key Features

  • Form & Function: A traditional French provincial earthenware jug (buire / cruche) designed specifically for holding, storing, and pouring walnut oil—a precious household necessity used both for cooking and as fuel for oil lamps during the 18th and 19th centuries.

  • Design Elements:

    • Features distinctive vertical molded/ribbed paneling running down the bulbous body.

    • Fitted with two heavy, thick strap handles anchored at the shoulder for easy lifting when heavy.

    • Includes a raised side pouring spout (bec) situated on the shoulder, alongside a wide central opening at the top.

    • Decorated with a pie-crust / twisted rope motif around the neck collar.

  • Glaze & Finish: Rich, warm honey-amber/chestnut lead glaze over terracotta redware, featuring subtle dark green glaze speckles (taches) and age-related patina, surface crackling, and wear typical of authentic hand-thrown regional pottery.
