The goat herd in Arcadian Landscape
Late 18th-century Italianate landscape with classical ruins
Very good quality late 18th/early 19th-century extensive river classical landscape with ruins and a Roman Campagna in the distance.

Probably painted by a very competent British artist in the /Claude Lorrain style.

Italianate classical landscape paintings with ruins were popular in European art during the 17th and 18th centuries. These paintings typically featured classical ruins set in idyllic landscapes, often with a focus on natural beauty and the passing of time.

Some notable examples of Italianate classical landscape paintings with ruins include:

Claude Lorrain’s “Landscape with Ruins” (1636): This painting depicts a pastoral landscape with ancient ruins in the foreground. The composition is balanced and serene, with a warm, golden light suffusing the scene.
Nicolas Poussin’s “Landscape with a Calm” (1650-51): In this painting, the ruins of a classical temple are visible on a hill in the background. The foreground is dominated by a tranquil river scene, with trees and foliage on either side.
