Jean Dreux - vintage medieval print, 1st CRUSADE
This wonderful rare print shows the ships preparing to leave France on 1st Crusade to Jerusalem
The print has captured the lovely, vibrant colours of the original 15th-century version.
The carries the names of all the leaders of the 1st Crusade including Godfrey of Bouillon who became the First ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1099 to 1100, he avoided the title of king, preferring that of princeps or Defender of the Holy Sepulchre.
Dreux Jean, also known by the name Dreux Bachoyer, was born in Paris, but he immigrated to Flanders before beginning his artistic career, perhaps because of the English occupation of Paris during the Hundred Years War. Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, hired him starting in 1448 to produce manuscripts.
Our print comes from CHRONICLES OF THE CRUSADES-MANUSCRIPT OF THE XV CENTURY-1st CRUSADE and is in the collection of the national library of Austria.
