Arundel Society Chromolithograph - The Annunciation by Jan van Eyck

This Arundel Society chromolithograph of the Annunciation is a highly collectible and historically significant piece, showcasing Jan van Eyck’s Annunciation Print, originally part of the renowned Ghent Altarpiece. This antique chromolithograph, created for the first Arundel Society publication, was drawn and lithographed by Christian Schultz (1817–1882) and printed by Hangard Mauge.

A Piece of Art History:

Arundel Society chromolithograph of the Annunciation

Founded in London in 1849, the Arundel Society was dedicated to preserving and promoting European Old Master artworks, particularly Flemish, Italian, and Renaissance paintings. Named after Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, a distinguished 17th-century art collector, the society played a crucial role in making Old Master paintings accessible to a wider audience.

During Schultz’s time, the Ghent Altarpiece was covered in aged varnish and overpainting, affecting its clarity. Restoration efforts, completed in 2021, have since revived its original brilliance, allowing collectors to appreciate it in its true form.
